Chapter 15
Kirsten rose, hired a car, and drove down to the hotel sheâd been staying at previously outside Montevideo. When she pulled up at the front entrance and stepped out of the car, she noticed Hudson watching from the hotel foyer. He didnât come to greet her, however. Instead, he turned and disappeared back inside the hotel. She found him sitting on the veranda of the bar. As she approached, he stood up, telling her to take a seat.
âBack for more auditions, is it?â he said. âI thought you were giving my films a miss.â
âIf another audition is what you need,â she said, âby all means.â
He took her hand and kissed it. âThatâs what I like to hear.â
Hudson stepped around the table, put his hand on her back, and steered her towards the elevator. She found it comical now. Now that she knew who he was, this pretence of the rather sly movie producer taking unsuspecting women up to his room was laughable. Once she went into the lift, the hand dropped.
âI hope you donât mind me doing this,â he said. âBetter to talk in the room. Some of what I have to tell you wonât be for outside ears.â
âWhat I have to tell you will be similar,â she said.
They remained quiet until the elevator reached Hudsonâs floor. He led the way to his room. Kirsten was soon back in the large lounge area outside of the bedroom, where many of the prospective stars of the films showed their figures. This time, Hudson merely asked if she wanted something to drink and pointed to a seat.
âCoffee if youâve got it,â said Kirsten. âRunning a little light on the energy today.â
âI take it your trip to Argentina was successful.â
Kirsten took Hudson through a very loose version of what happened; how she had dug up connections with gun running and sites Alvez may run them to. She explained that one of the potential men involved was on her countryâs list of being watched, and she didnât think it was a coincidence. âHowever, Marcello Paz will be difficult to get to talk to, except that heâs a film man, and maybe you can do the introductions.â
âAre you sure heâll back my sort of films?â he said, laughing. âThere are some decent people in this world who donât want to film naked women.â
Kirsten was feeling more at ease with the manâs company. Yes, his cover was grotesque, but she could see that he wasnât like that. He certainly was an excellent actor.
âI think he will. Heâll look to get involved. I need you to set up a meeting.â
âWhere is he? Let me discover him,â said Hudson. âIâll need to find some way of bumping into him or realising that his money will be useful to me.â
âMagdalena, do you know it?â
âOver from here and down a bit,â he said. âSoutheast of Buenos Aires, along the coast. Yes, I know it. I might have a contact in there as well. We can do this,â he said confidently as he poured coffee.
